About The Position

Under the supervision of on duty, licensed personnel (i.e., Registered Nurse, Licensed Vocational Nurse, or Providers), the Patient Care Assistant may perform a variety of functions in support and care of patients requiring urgent or emergency care. This role is for a full-time evening shift, from 3 AM to 3 PM.

Requirements

  • Must possess knowledge and understanding of daily assignments, unit activities, and basic computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel programs and software applications.
  • Demonstrates effective and accurate verbal and written communication.
  • Must be flexible in changing assignments, workloads, and learning of new skills.
  • Able to comprehend and communicate instructions, multitask, be detail oriented, and organized.
  • Possess general knowledge of safety and infection control.
  • Completion of Premier venous access training and competency upon hire.
  • A minimum of a High School Diploma or GED equivalent is required.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills are required.
  • Current BLS Certification or obtained within first 14 days of employment.
  • ACLS & PALS must be current or obtained within 12 months of hire.

Nice To Haves

  • Two years’ experience in an urgent care, emergency department, or similar healthcare setting OR enrolled in an accredited registered nursing program with completion of one clinical rotation OR certified Paramedic or Intermediate EMT

Responsibilities

  • Welcome and greet all patients in person and/or over the phone.
  • Answer the phone while maintaining a polite, consistent manner practicing proper telephone etiquette.
  • Protect patient confidentiality and ensure that Protected Health Information is secured.
  • Assist in keeping Premier ER clean and organized.
  • Clean and disinfect equipment, instruments, and supplies as needed.
  • Attend staff meetings as scheduled.
  • Maintain own knowledge/skills and attend appropriate training for role responsibilities.
  • Assume responsibility for coordination of educational activities, as appropriate.
  • Assist in facility and system Quality-Assurance activities.
  • Display professionalism, tact, respect, and team effort when working with coworkers and the public.
  • Refer patient complaints to appropriate designated personnel as needed.
  • Assist with placing patients in rooms after registration.
  • Assist with patient transport within the facility or to their car upon discharge.
  • Act as a sitter for psychiatric patients in crisis (suicidal ideation, homicidal ideation) when needed.
  • Receive supplies into the facility, unpack and properly store items in a timely manner.
  • Perform tasks and/or assist with procedures that are within his or her knowledgebase, competency, and as permitted by the policies and procedures of Premier ER.
  • Transport specimens to partner labs as needed.
  • Work collaboratively with other disciplines to provide well-coordinated patient care.
  • Promote a positive attitude for good interpersonal, interdepartmental, and interfacility relationships.
  • Maintain awareness of and adhere to current policies and procedure set forth by Premier as well as other regulatory guidelines.
  • Adhere to established laboratory procedures and follow established safety guidelines for working in the laboratory.
  • Process specimens, report results, and file paperwork according to written Laboratory procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Perform tasks and/or assist with procedures that are within employee’s knowledge base, competency, and as permitted by the policies and procedures of Premier ER.
  • Assist with resuscitation efforts such as performing chest compressions, assisting with retrieval of needed supplies, and/or performing other tasks per Premier’s Policies and Procedures and according to the Patient Care Assistant’s documented training and competence assessment.
  • Initiate intravenous access and/or perform phlebotomy.
  • Collect specimens such as blood and urine and perform laboratory tests as ordered on the specimens.
  • Obtain patient’s weight and vital signs.
  • Acquire 12 Lead EKG’s and place patients on continuous cardiac and/or pulse oximetry monitoring, non-invasive blood pressure monitoring systems as directed and/or ordered by the provider.
  • Assist with application of orthopedic splints and dressings.
  • Measure and fit crutches and instruct patients on a proper crutch use.
  • Assist with wound care.
  • Assist with patient transport within the facility and/or positioning of the patients.
