About The Position

The PBX Operator answers and directs all incoming calls, assists with outgoing calls, internal calls, and overhead paging. Monitors alarm panels, performs various alarm testing, and calls codes (red, blue, yellow). This role also maintains and updates internal phone, extension, and pager lists.

Requirements

High School Diploma or Equivalent
Must demonstrate excellent customer service skills
Must be able to read, write and communicate effectively in English
Understanding of basic medical terminology
Ability to maintain a work pace appropriate to the workload
Ability to multitask

Nice To Haves

One year of previous PBX experience
Bilingual skills to communicate effectively with patients and families
Previous experience working in a hospital

Responsibilities

Operates telephone switchboard to relay incoming, outgoing, and inter-office calls in a timely, accurate, and professional manner.
Maintains an alphabetical file of patients’ names, room number, and telephone extensions to expedite relaying of calls.
Pages authorized personnel over the intercom system.
Announces close of visiting hours and other notifications.
Records all pertinent information regarding the hospital’s telephone network system and notifies telephone carrier and supervisor of any issues and/or malfunctions.
Pages all codes and emergencies and follows proper procedure as established in Fire and Safety Manual and Disaster Plan.
Maintains communications center in the event of a Fire and/or a Disaster.
Demonstrates appropriate use of independent judgement and decision making.
Demonstrates excellent customer service at all times.
Ensures the work area is clean, clutter free, and organized.
