About The Position

The Payroll Specialist will be responsible for effectively performing payroll functions, including being liaison with third party payroll processing partner, benefit deduction processing, company/regulatory reporting, union reporting for the Company. The ideal candidate will have experience with union agreements and a comprehensive understanding of Canadian payroll regulations.

Requirements

  • Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) designation is required with a minimum of 5 years of direct payroll experience.
  • Strong knowledge of Canadian payroll laws, including regulations across multiple provinces.
  • Experience with union payrolls.
  • Familiarity with Canadian tax requirements, including statutory deductions and T4 processing.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and Teams.
  • Experience with payroll software such as UKG, Ceridian, or ADP.
  • Knowledge of web-based payroll processing systems.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage high-volume workloads and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills to identify, resolve, and prevent payroll issues.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to build strong relationships and collaborate with colleagues and stakeholders.
  • Customer-focused with a positive, high-energy attitude.
  • Proven ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing priorities in a fast-paced setting.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with implementing new payroll software would be consider  an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Act as the first point of contact for payroll-related inquiries and troubleshooting.
  • Support full-cycle in-house biweekly payrolls, including coverage for other team members during vacation.
  • Process payroll journal entries and reconcile accounts related to Canadian entities.
  • Manage end-to-end payroll processing for employees, ensuring accuracy and compliance with Canadian laws and regulations.
  •  Maintain knowledge of union agreements, benefits, and compliance with all relevant external agencies.
  • Process Records of Employment (ROEs) for Service Canada within deadlines.
  • Submit payroll contributions to RRSP providers.
  • Process final payrolls for terminations in alignment with government requirements and ensure accuracy and compliance with local labor laws.
  • Maintain and process attendance records for payroll.
  • Calculate statutory holiday pay as per applicable provincial standards.
  • Ensure all monthly, quarterly, and annual payroll reports are filed accurately and on time (e.g., source deductions, union dues, WCB, WSIB, WCBC, EHT,  etc.).
  • Complete year-end payroll-related tasks, including preparation of T4 and T2200 forms.
  • Compile and provide payroll reports to internal and external stakeholders as required.
  • Support in various other payroll projects and duties as required.
