About The Position

The Virginia Department of Health is seeking a Payroll Accountant Sr. to perform advanced professional work involving the analysis and interpretation of fiscal data and the application of accounting theory and principles. The role serves a major program or financial specialty with agency-wide implications. Work includes resources management, business operations, accounting system development, cost distribution, receivables, and complex analysis of financial activities, including compensation and benefits accounting. The position reconciles employee and employer healthcare, retirement, and group life, as well as disability payments and workers' compensation.

Requirements

• Knowledge of payroll and benefits transactions using various systems, including ensuring policies, procedures, and deadlines are met.
• Ability to learn multiple web-based systems and provide guidance on complex payroll and benefit issues.
• Ability to audit internal and external work, ensure accuracy, and provide feedback or resolution for identified issues.
• Knowledge of Department of Accounts (DOA) policies and procedures.
• Strong accounting and organizational skills.
• Knowledge of benefit and leave programs, including VSDP, deferred compensation, and retirement plans.

Nice To Haves

• Knowledge of the Commonwealth’s payroll system.
• Experience with Cardinal HCM.
• Experience processing payroll.
