About The Position

EllisDon is seeking an experienced Screed Operator to join their highway/town paving crew. The ideal candidate will have strong paving experience, work well as part of a team, and understand the demands of both highway and municipal road projects. This is a seasonal position with project-dependent hours, requiring overtime, and willingness to work evenings, nights, and weekends on various schedules. The hourly rate is dependent on experience.

Requirements

  • Minimum 4 years' operating a screed is required.
  • Proven experience in highway and municipal paving.
  • CSTS 2020, WHMIS 2015, and Ground Disturbance 201 are required.
  • A valid class 5(3A license required for Water Truck Operators) or better driver's license is required.
  • A driver's abstract is required and must be obtained no more than 30 days prior to employment start date.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to interpret project plans and specifications.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Safety Oriented
  • Able to lift 50 lbs.
  • Able to work in a fast paced, high production environment.
  • Able to work unsupervised.
  • Able to work well with others.
  • Good communication skills
  • A reliable means of transportation is required.
  • Proficient English language skills required.
  • Completion of high school or equivalent is required.

  • Experience on large-scale highway projects considered an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Perform asphalt paving tasks including but not limited to: spreading and leveling asphalt, compacting surfaces using rollers, excavating and grading areas, and operating skid steers for various tasks.
  • Operate screed on asphalt paving operations for highway and town projects.
  • Communicate clearly with foreman and crew to ensure smooth operations.
  • Adhere to environmental regulations and company policies regarding waste disposal and material usage.
  • Conduct routine inspections and maintenance on equipment to ensure optimal performance and prevent downtime.
  • Ability to use automatic grade controls.
  • Manually set angle and depth of screed.
  • Operate valves to regulate flow of material at a specified rate.
  • Communicates with asphalt paving operator on flow of paving machine.
  • Observes distribution of material over road surfaces to ensure uniform distribution.
  • Using depth gauge, verify depth specifications of compacted asphalt.
  • Maintain the pace and continuity of the paving job.
  • Perform daily maintenance and safety checks on the equipment.
  • Other duties as required.
