About The Position

Door County Government is seeking a Patrol Deputy to join the Sheriff’s Office, which is responsible for public safety, maintaining order, and providing essential law enforcement services to residents and visitors of the beautiful Door Peninsula. The Sheriff’s Office is committed to fair, consistent, and transparent practices, and works in partnership with the community to address concerns, solve problems, and enhance the overall safety and well-being of Door County. This position supports the County's public safety mission through enforcement of state, federal, and local laws. The role involves field-based law enforcement duties including patrol, investigation, emergency response, and public engagement. Patrol Deputies exercise independent judgment in routine and emergency situations to ensure community safety and uphold legal standards.

Requirements

  • At least 18 years of age.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • At least sixty (60) college credits in police science, criminal justice or related field.
  • Certified law enforcement officer per Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board, or obtained certification within 12 months of hire.
  • Successful completion of Door County Sheriff’s Office Field Training Officer (FTO) training program within 12 months of hire.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree in police science, criminal justice, or related field from an accredited institution.
  • Prior experience in law enforcement or public safety.
  • Familiarity with law enforcement technology and reporting systems.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts vehicle patrols on assigned shifts to monitor public areas, enforce criminal, traffic and ordinance laws, and respond to incidents to include accidents, and provide first aid as needed.
  • Responds to emergency calls involving accidents, disturbances, criminal activity, and public safety concerns; takes appropriate enforcement actions, and or perform life-saving actions.
  • Investigates crimes and traffic incidents by collecting evidence, interviewing witnesses, interrogating suspects, and preparing detailed reports.
  • Executes arrests, conducts searches, and secures crime scenes in compliance with legal procedures.
  • Prepares and submits investigative and procedural documentation such as incident reports, arrest records, and field notes.
  • Serves civil process documents and provides court testimony related to investigations and enforcement actions.
  • Engages in community policing by assisting citizens, promoting crime prevention, and participating in public safety events.
  • Coordinates with other law enforcement agencies, legal offices, and internal units to manage cases and uphold departmental policies.
  • Maintains readiness and communication through radio and mobile technology; uses department-issued equipment responsibly.
