About The Position

The Patient Transporter is responsible for the maintenance and quality of patient care within Chesapeake Regional Medical Center. This role requires adherence to Service Excellence Standards and Expectations, exhibiting excellent customer relations to patients, visitors, physicians, and co-workers. The transporter must demonstrate courteous communication skills, good judgment, and a commitment to fostering positive workplace and customer environments. Teamwork is essential for continuous work quality improvement. The role involves confirming patient identification, understanding the needs of various age groups, documenting and alerting supervisors about equipment malfunctions, and making recommendations for departmental needs and patient transport modes. Recognizing and responding to emergencies, including CPR, is also a key responsibility. Proper handling of patient's IV and other medical devices, cleaning and maintaining transport equipment, filling oxygen tanks, and utilizing isolation techniques are critical tasks. The transporter will assist patients with movement to and from various surfaces and equipment, review patient orders, and attend required in-services and meetings. Communication of equipment malfunctions and inventory levels, rotating call, and presenting a positive image are expected. Flexibility in scheduling is necessary to ensure patient care, and cross-training may be required. Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • BLS certified within 30 days of hire.

  • Confirm patient identification prior to transport by verbal confirmation and identification band on inpatients.
  • Be competent and knowledgeable in regards to the needs and concerns of individuals in various age groups (pediatrics to geriatrics).
  • Document and alert the Radiology Supervisor/Director and/or Lead of the malfunction of various types of medical equipment.
  • Make recommendations to the Transport Lead/Radiology Manager/Director as to additional transport, IV poles, and oxygen equipment needed.
  • Make recommendation to nursing staff on how to use proper transport modes for patients.
  • Recognize emergency situations and initiate code procedures and CPR if necessary.
  • Assure proper handling of patient's IV and other medical devices during transport.
  • Notify nursing units when leaving and returning with patients and utilize ticket to ride.
  • Assist in the movement of patients to and from wheelchairs, stretchers, beds, and radiographic tables, utilizing safety procedures and correct body mechanics.
  • Clean and initiate repairs as necessary on all transport equipment.
  • Fill oxygen tanks as needed and check oxygen regulators for proper operations prior to use.
  • Utilize proper isolation techniques according to Hospital policy.
  • Assist patients to and from stretchers, wheelchairs, and radiology equipment to include CT/MRI scanner.
  • Review patient's ticket to ride and verify physician’s orders prior to patient transport to the department.
  • Attend in-services, hospital-wide orientations, and other meetings as required.
  • Communicate equipment malfunctions and low inventory levels to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Rotate call as needed.
  • Present self in a positive manner, as reflected by personal attire and etiquette.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to flexible scheduling when necessary to ensure patient care.
  • May be cross trained as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
