About The Position

The Patient Transporter, Lead is responsible for the maintenance and quality of patient care within Chesapeake Regional Medical Center. This role involves establishing work assignments, dispatching Patient Transporters, performing safety inspections, and utilizing the Radiology Information Computer System (EPIC). The Lead Patient Transporter is expected to adhere to Service Excellence Standards, exhibit excellent customer relations, and demonstrate courteous communication skills. They will work as a team to continuously improve work quality, confirm patient identification, and document equipment malfunctions. Additionally, this role involves making recommendations for equipment needs, assisting nursing staff with transport modes, maintaining department policies, and assisting with new hire interviews and supply orders. The Lead Patient Transporter must also recognize and respond to emergency situations, ensure proper handling of patient's IV and medical devices, assist with patient movement, clean and repair transport equipment, fill oxygen tanks, and utilize proper isolation techniques. Proficiency in relaying clinical information and assisting patients with various equipment is essential. The role also requires attending in-services and meetings, communicating equipment issues and inventory levels, rotating call, presenting a positive image, and demonstrating flexibility in scheduling. Cross-training may also be required.

Requirements

High School diploma or equivalent
3+ years as a transporter.
Must be BLS certified within 45 days of employment.

Responsibilities

Establish work assignments for the Patient Transporters.
Dispatch Patient Transporters as workflow requires.
Perform visual preventative safety inspections and report dangerous department equipment conditions to appropriate personnel.
Utilize all assigned functions of the Radiology Information Computer System (EPIC).
Adhere to Service Excellence Standards and Expectations at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center.
Exhibit excellent customer relations to patients, visitors, physicians, and co-workers.
Exhibit courteous communication skills and an ability to work with others, exercising good judgment in performance of job duties.

Confirm patient identification prior to procedure by verbal confirmation on outpatients and identification band on in-patients.
Document and alert the Radiology Supervisor/Director of the malfunction of various types of medical equipment used in the performance of job duties.
Make recommendations to the Radiology Manager and Director as to additional transport, IV poles, and oxygen equipment needed to operate the department.
Make recommendation to nursing staff on how to use proper transport modes for patients.
Maintain established department policies, procedures, objectives, and quality improvement programs as well as safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
Assist in the interview process with new hires when requested.
Assist the Nursing Supervisor in monitoring stock levels and order supplies as needed, staying within the established expense budget.
Recognize emergency situations and initiate code procedures and CPR if necessary.
Assure proper handling of patient's IV and other medical devices during transport.
Assist in the movement of patients to and from wheelchairs, stretchers, beds, and radiographic tables, utilizing safety procedures and correct body mechanics.
Clean and initiate repairs as necessary on all transport equipment.
Fill oxygen tanks as needed and check oxygen regulators for proper operations prior to use.
Utilize proper isolation techniques according to Hospital policy.
Utilize Radiology Information System (computer system) to accurately perform all functions assigned.
Utilize the Hospital Information System (EPIC) regarding transport.
Must be proficient at relaying clinical information quickly and accurately to other medical personnel inside and outside the hospital.
Assist patients to and from stretchers, wheelchairs, and radiology equipment to include CT/MRI scanner.
Attend in-services, hospital-wide orientations, and other meetings as required.
Communicate equipment malfunctions and low inventory levels to the appropriate supervisor.
Rotate call as needed.
Present self in a positive manner, as reflected by personal attire and etiquette.
Demonstrate a commitment to flexible scheduling when necessary to ensure patient care.
May be crossed trained as needed.
Perform other duties as assigned.
