About The Position

The Patient Transport role is a part-time position within the Advocate South Suburban Hospital - Patient Transport Department. This role is responsible for the safe and efficient transportation of patients within the hospital, ensuring patient privacy and adherence to safety protocols. The position also involves training new staff, maintaining equipment, and handling administrative tasks related to patient records.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or GED
  • Some computer knowledge
  • Skills in handling and operation of a variety of transportation equipment.
  • Ability to tolerate prolonged walking or standing.
  • Ability to work weekend, holidays and different shifts in order to accommodate staffing needs.
  • Recognize needs and behaviors of all age groups. Evidence of this can be shown by recognizing levels of development and modifying approach and exhibiting communication skills necessary to interpret age specific responses.
  • Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance. For patient lifts of over 35 pounds, or when patient is unable to assist with the lift, patient handling equipment is expected to be used, with at least one other associate, when available. Unique patient lifting/movement situations will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Responsibilities

  • Identify proper patient to be transported by checking armband.
  • Ensure the mode of transport is appropriate to the patient’s condition.
  • Ensure proper precautions are taken for each patient, i.e., oxygen, I-med, foley catheter, chest tube, etc.
  • Ensure the patient is properly covered to protect their privacy.
  • Ensure oxygen tanks are filled daily.
  • Instruct and help new transport staff so they are properly trained.
  • Ensure any pertinent patient information is relayed to supervisor or proper department/technician.
  • Ensure supervisor or departments are aware of any delays in getting patients.
  • Demonstrate a knowledge of institutional policies regarding patient care, fire, safety, infection control, etc. Review department manuals and sign-off supplement.
  • Ensure carts are clean and sheets are in place at all times. Report any cart or wheelchair that is not working properly and in need of repair.
  • Be able to make film copies.
  • Look up and file patient folders; also write new folders out.
  • Deal with stressful situations in a calm and professional manner.
  • Report patient safety events and near misses in timely fashion.
  • Adhere to all behavioral and procedural patient safety practices.
  • Promote culture of safety through identifying threats to patient safety and intervening to prevent patient harm.
  • Communicate openly and promote team work.
  • Report intimidating behavior and other threats to patient safety promptly.
