About The Position

The Patient Transport position is a part-time role within the Advocate South Suburban Hospital - Patient Transport Department. The role involves transporting patients, ensuring their safety and privacy, and maintaining equipment. The position requires flexibility in scheduling, including alternating weekends and holidays, and involves direct patient contact. The successful candidate will be responsible for identifying patients, selecting appropriate transport methods, taking necessary precautions, and communicating pertinent information to supervisors and other staff. This role also includes some administrative tasks such as making film copies, looking up and filing patient folders, and writing new folders. The ability to handle stressful situations calmly and professionally is essential.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or GED
  • Some computer knowledge
  • Skills in handling and operation of a variety of transportation equipment.
  • Ability to tolerate prolonged walking or standing.
  • Ability to work weekend, holidays and different shifts in order to accommodate staffing needs.
  • Ability to recognize needs and behaviors of all age groups.
  • Ability to recognize levels of development and modify approach.
  • Ability to exhibit communication skills necessary to interpret age specific responses.
  • Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance.

Responsibilities

  • Identify proper patient to be transported by checking armband.
  • Make sure mode of transport is appropriate to patient’s condition.
  • Make sure proper precautions are taken for each patient, i.e., oxygen, I-med, foley catheter, chest tube, etc.
  • Make sure patient is properly covered to protect their privacy.
  • Make sure oxygen tanks are filled daily.
  • Instruct and help new transport staff so they are properly trained.
  • Make sure any pertinent patient information is relayed to supervisor or proper department/technician.
  • Make sure supervisor or departments are aware of any delays in getting patients.
  • Demonstrate a knowledge of institutional policies regarding patient care, fire, safety, infection control, etc. Review department manuals and sign-off supplement.
  • Make sure carts are clean and sheets are in place at all times. Report any cart or wheelchair that is not working properly and in need of repair.
  • Be able to make film copies.
  • Look up and file patient folders; also write new folders out.
  • Should be able to deal with stressful situations in a calm and professional manner.
  • Report patient safety events and near misses in timely fashion.
  • Adhere to all behavioral and procedural patient safety practices.
  • Promote culture of safety through identifying threats to patient safety and intervening to prevent patient harm.
  • Communicate openly and promote team work.
  • Report intimidating behavior and other threats to patient safety promptly.
