About The Position

When you join the growing BILH team, you're not just taking a job, you’re making a difference in people’s lives. Performs as a working leader in the Patient Transport Service department. Oversees the department's operation in the absence of a manager. Leads employees to exceed customer expectations ensuring patients are being transported in timely fashion. Makes informed decisions, within established guidelines, to serve customers and employees. Communicates and interacts daily with customers (Nursing, Unit Coordinators, Practice Administrators, patients, public, etc.). Transports patients, specimen, deceased patients and other related transport functions. Cleans transport equipment on a daily basis.

Requirements

  • Some High School required.
  • 1-3 years related work experience required.
  • Ability to collaborate and effectively communicate with physicians and other health care professionals.
  • Ability to follow standard procedures using own discretion and be able to comprehend the needs of patients and react appropriately and with sensitivity.
  • Demonstrated positive interpersonal communication skills. Ability to cooperate with all members of the health care team.
  • Basic familiarity with computers. Ability to navigate at a basic level within web-based applications.

Nice To Haves

  • License Heartsaver Certificate (CPR) preferred.

Responsibilities

  • In conjunction with the manager/supervisor, schedules and assigns duties for the shift ensuring patients are transported in a timely manner and according to quality standards on the East and West Campus. Monitors daily activities of department work and reports any performance related issues (including conduct, quality, quantity, timeliness) to the supervisor/manager.
  • Collaborates with transporters to change break times to accommodate patient needs. Safely transports patients, specimens and other items to and from patient rooms and testing and other areas according to departmental protocols. Promptly notifying appropriate personnel of any delays that may affect operational workflow. Transports deceased patients to the morgue.
  • Ensures all employees are in proper uniform and have identification visible at all times. Reports progress and compliance of all staff and volunteers with department standards to the supervisors/manager.
  • Monitors and ensure adequate availability of wheelchairs in all lobbies.
  • Communicates with service response center/ public safety at night as needed. Recognizes and assumes responsibility for reporting patient care or safety concerns to appropriate staff.
  • In conjunction with the supervisor, conducts initial and follow up training of new employees, volunteers and staff who require additional skill development in accordance with department standards. Actively participates and provides support to Performance Improvement and Service Excellence Teams.
  • Directs or assumes responsibility for complex, difficult or unusual transport requests.
  • Monitors par levels and stocks various locations with equipment (wheelchairs, stretchers). Maintains orderliness and cleanliness of working area, stretchers, wheelchairs, IV poles and other items used in patient transportation. Conducts yearly scheduled equipment cleaning project.
  • Initiates a friendly but respectful relationship with patients and demonstrates responsiveness to patient's physical, psychological and social needs. Makes judgments with regards to patient care and operational flow based on established policies and guidelines.
  • Performs miscellaneous duties such as collecting and transporting supplies in order to assist in the smooth operation of the department. Performs other work requiring equal skill, effort and responsibility as directed. May perform work of a higher level in preparation for increased responsibility.
