About The Position

The Patient Sitter, working under the supervision of a registered nurse, is responsible for maintaining constant direct observation and visualization of identified patient(s). This role is crucial for ensuring patient safety and privacy by preventing patients from leaving their rooms unattended, removing potential hazards, and maintaining a secure environment.

Requirements

  • Ability to read in English to follow oral and/or written instructions.
  • Ability to prioritize work.
  • Good customer service skills.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Current American Heart Association BLS certification.
  • One (1) year of experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior constant observer and/or CNA experience preferred.
  • For constant observers utilized exclusively with non-behavioral health patients, all related competencies must be administered and completed prior to assignment of a patient. There will be one level of competency for all constant observers in this category.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain constant direct observation and visualization of patient(s).
  • Keep patient within view at all times.
  • Never leave patient unattended.
  • Use the call light/intercom system to summon staff for assistance or needed equipment/supplies.
  • Accompany and stay with patient when transported off the unit for any diagnostic tests or procedures, after asking the nurse.
  • Remain in the patient room at all times and do not leave without RN approval and/or relief.
  • Document observations on the flow sheet as instructed and indicated.
  • Keep patient room door open/partially open at all times.
  • Keep bathroom door open at all times.
  • Remove sharp/dangerous items out of the room.
  • Assist the nurse to screen all items brought in by visitors.
  • Know the patient’s ordered activity level.
  • Avoid wearing items around the neck (ID badge, stethoscopes, necklace, etc.).
  • Maintain confidentiality of all patient information.
  • Refrain from discussing patient information with anyone other than the nurse or physician.
  • Respect the patient’s right to dignity while providing care, with concern for safety as a priority.
  • Listen and acknowledge patient’s complaints and feelings.
  • Convey attitudes of compassion, empathy, and understanding.
  • Do not discuss any information related to the patient’s medical condition or plan of care.
  • Seek guidance and direction when unsure.
  • Inform the nurse immediately if the patient expresses a desire to harm self/others or wants to leave the hospital.
  • Provide report to the relief patient sitter and to the nurse prior to leaving at shift end.
  • Provide only constant observation.
  • Do not make personal phone calls, eat food in the room, or sleep.
  • Allow patient control of television (channel, volume).
  • Do not use any items or personal electronics (iPod, iPad, game boy, etc.) or anything that can distract attention from the patient.
  • Do not leave patient(s) until the relief patient sitter has arrived and is in the patient room.
  • Do not use the patient's bathroom for personal use.
  • Perform other related job tasks or responsibilities as assigned.
