About The Position

This position is responsible for providing constant visual observation of patients in the Emergency Department to ensure their safety and well-being. The Patient Sitter obtains verbal reports from nurses, maintains visual observation of patients, records relevant data, and communicates any changes or concerns to the nursing staff. The role requires functioning cooperatively as a team member, maintaining patient privacy, and complying with hospital policies and emergency codes.

Requirements

  • Six (6) months experience as a caregiver in any setting.
  • High School Diploma or Equivalency (HSE).
  • Valid American Heart Association (AHA) certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and maintain certification.
  • Valid, unrestricted insurable driver’s license.
  • Resume and references are required.

  • Navajo/Indian Preference: Applicants who are enrolled members of the Navajo Nation will be given primary preference in hiring and employment. Members of other federally recognized Indian tribes will be given secondary preference.

Responsibilities

  • Obtains verbal report from the patient’s nurse regarding care needs, diagnosis, communication barriers, and special considerations.
  • Positions self in patient room at bedside to maintain constant visual observation of the patient.
  • Never leaves the patient alone or out of sight unless specifically instructed by the nurse.
  • Accurately and legibly records data collected.
  • Notifies registered nurse of any untoward events, behavioral changes, or violent behavior.
  • Obtains instruction from nurse regarding ambulation limitations and redirection strategies.
  • Observes patient’s activity and behavior, communicating regularly with the nurse.
  • Receives direction from the nurse regarding what to report, to whom, and how.
  • Functions cooperatively as a team member and responds to changing patients/units as directed by House Supervisor.
  • Communicates in a professional manner and demonstrates respect for patients, families/significant others, and healthcare members.
  • Complies with all hospital rules, regulations, and nursing standards.
  • Verbalizes understanding and responsibilities during all TMC emergency codes.
  • Maintains the privacy and security of all confidential and protected health information, using and disclosing only necessary information.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
