About The Position

The mission of Correctional Managed Care is to address the healthcare needs of underserved patient populations within the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) and the Texas Juvenile Justice Department (TJJD). This role has advanced Patient Services Specialist skills and is proficient in independently maintaining a positive patient experience by consistently exceeding expectations in customer service and patient care. The specialist will coordinate clerical and medical activities of a healthcare team, manage patient registration, and facilitate access to UTMB services for new and returning patients.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and one (1) year clerical or customer service experience.
  • OR High school or equivalent and three (3) years clerical or customer service experience.
  • Security clearance is required.
  • Pre-employment drug testing is also required.

Responsibilities

  • Function as a team leader, providing peer guidance and leadership.
  • Effectively triage problems and understand clinic flow to maximize clinic usage to meet patient needs.
  • Provide high-level customer service in all interactions with internal and external customers.
  • Engage in direct, professional, and knowledgeable interactions with patients, physicians, referral sources, and the treatment team.
  • Answer calls accurately and with exceptional customer service, ensuring caller's needs are met and accurate information is obtained.
  • Document and triage calls appropriately, ensuring patient satisfaction and patient safety.
  • Act as a patient advocate and liaison with various departments to meet mutual goals.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality regarding access to patient and other clinical information.
  • Address patient concerns, provide service recovery, and escalate issues as needed.
  • Apply clinical entity policies to schedule appointments.
  • Coordinate financial counseling for day surgery.
  • Complete reminder calls to patients for scheduled appointments.
  • Educate patients/responsible parties regarding the billing process and any additional financial responsibilities, including third-party benefits information.
  • Provide out-of-pocket cost estimates to patients and counsel patients about unpaid bills.
  • Obtain future appointments at the time of service for clinic follow-up, referrals, and ancillary services.
  • Arrive patients and prepare paperwork/chart for visits.
  • Appropriately receipt all monies collected, tokens distributed, and deferments authorized.
  • Verify, ensure eligibility, and pre-register patients by obtaining patient demographics and third-party coverage(s) at every encounter.
  • Obtain and document information required for third-party coverage.
  • Ensure compliance with Medicare and third-party coverage.
  • Communicate with patients, referral sources, UTMB physicians, and clinical staff regarding any obstacle to access or authorization.
  • Fully disposition each patient within the designated timeline.
  • Perform related duties as required.
  • Read all OSA Announcements and relevant communications relating to job duties.
  • Successfully complete competency-based training and testing on an annual basis.
  • Prioritize and complete all work in an accurate, effective, and efficient manner.
  • Participate in team meetings/activities and support the philosophy and goals of the team/department.
  • Adhere to internal controls and reporting structure established for the department.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
