About The Position

The Patient Services Associate (PSA) in the Behavioral Health Service Line (BHSL) Women's Inpatient Unit is a specifically trained member of the unit-based care team who provides both clerical and patient care support. The PSA works under the direct supervision of the Clinical Services Manager (CSM) and under the direction of the RN, performs tasks and duties for which they possess the competency that do not require a licensed practitioner. In the clerical support role, duties include assisting with processing of medical records for patient admission and discharge and receptionist for the nursing unit. Employee must successfully complete a UAMS-sponsored conflict management training to identify, prevent, and mitigate disruptive behaviors using methods such as non-escalation, de-escalation, personal protection from physical assaults, and physical alternatives within six months of hire.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma, GED, or formal education equivalent
  • 1 year of work experience in the Health Care Field or in a service-oriented position
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to accept and follow written and verbal instructions
  • Ability to communicate following Guest Care guidelines
  • Successful completion of the UAMS PCT and PSC courses
  • Proof of legal authority to work in the United States on the first day of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Provide administrative and patient support services within a behavioral health setting.
  • Greet patients, families, visitors, and members of the healthcare team in a professional and compassionate manner.
  • Register patients and verify demographic, contact, insurance, and other required information.
  • Schedule, reschedule, and confirm behavioral health appointments.
  • Answer telephone calls, respond to patient inquiries, and direct calls to the appropriate clinical or administrative staff.
  • Coordinate referrals, authorizations, medical records, and other documentation required for patient care.
  • Maintain accurate patient information in the electronic medical record and scheduling systems.
  • Assist with check-in and check-out processes and ensure required forms and documentation are completed.
  • Collect and process payments or other financial information according to organizational procedures.
  • Communicate with providers, nurses, therapists, social workers, insurance companies, and other departments to coordinate patient services.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA and behavioral health privacy requirements.
  • Recognize and appropriately escalate urgent patient concerns or changes in behavior to clinical staff.
  • Support a safe, respectful, and welcoming environment for patients experiencing emotional or behavioral health concerns.
  • Assist with maintaining organized work areas, patient records, supplies, and front-desk operations.
  • Process messages, work queues, referrals, and other administrative tasks in a timely manner.
  • Perform other duties as needed.
