The Patient Service Representative (PSR) is responsible for creating the initial electronic health record, which serves as the foundation for patient medical records used by the entire healthcare team. This role is crucial for preventing duplicate medical records, ensuring patient safety, and maintaining accurate billing. The PSR must adhere to organizational mandates for patient identification prior to care delivery. They are also responsible for checking in and registering patients, verifying demographic and insurance information, collecting co-pays, and maintaining patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA. Additionally, the PSR needs a solid understanding of insurance basics, contracted plans, and financial obligations, knowing when to refer patients to Financial Advocates. They must be knowledgeable about various government regulations and forms (HIPAA, EMTALA, Consent for Treatment, etc.) and obtain necessary signatures. The role may involve scheduling appointments, providing detailed patient information, performing visit closures, and educating patients on the patient portal. A key aspect of the job is creating a welcoming environment through exceptional customer service, including greeting patients, answering phones, and maintaining public relations. The PSR may also be involved in e-scanning documents, managing faxes, handling in-basket messages, and assisting with emergent needs as directed by the clinical team. Monitoring and working electronic health record work queues and potentially assisting with orientation and training are also part of the responsibilities.
