The Patient Service Representative (PSR) creates the initial electronic health record, ensuring patient safety and preventing duplicate records. They register patients, verify demographic and insurance information, and collect co-pays. The PSR maintains patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA, understands insurance basics, and discusses financial obligations with patients, referring them to Financial Advocates when necessary. They ensure compliance with regulations like HIPAA, EMTALA, and others by obtaining required signatures and forms. The role may involve scheduling appointments, providing test preparation information, performing visit closure, and educating patients on the patient portal. The PSR is responsible for creating a welcoming environment, answering phones, and maintaining positive public relations. They proactively communicate customer service issues and process improvement opportunities to management. Additional duties may include e-scanning documents, managing faxes and in-basket messages, and assisting with orientation and training.
