The Patient Service Representative (PSR) I in Cardiology is responsible for creating the initial electronic health record, which serves as the foundation for the patient medical record used by the entire healthcare team. This role is crucial for preventing duplicate medical records, ensuring patient safety, and facilitating accurate billing. The PSR registers patients, verifies demographic and insurance information, and collects co-pays and other patient financial responsibilities. They maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA, understand insurance basics, and know which plans the organization contracts with. Additionally, they are knowledgeable about various government regulations and forms, such as HIPAA, EMTALA, and Medicare notices. The role may involve scheduling appointments, providing detailed information about test preparations and procedures, performing visit closures, and educating patients on the use of the patient portal. The PSR is expected to create a welcoming environment, handle inquiries, answer telephones, and maintain positive public relations with patients, families, and staff. They proactively communicate customer service issues and process improvement opportunities to management. Other duties may include assisting patients with transportation, directions, interpreter services, e-scanning documents, managing faxes and in-basket messages, and monitoring electronic health record work queues. The position may also involve assisting with orientation and training of new staff.
