It also prevents duplicate medical records, ensuring patient safety and preventing billing issues. The role requires adherence to organizational mandates for positive patient identification to ensure patient safety. Responsibilities include checking in and registering patients, verifying demographic and insurance information, and collecting co-pays. Accurate information collection is crucial for timely payment and preventing billing problems. The role also involves maintaining patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA. The Patient Service Representative must understand insurance basics, recognize different plan types, and know which plans Advocate Health contracts with. They will discuss financial obligations with patients and refer them to Financial Advocates when necessary. Additionally, the role requires knowledge of compliance regulations such as HIPAA, EMTALA, Consent for Treatment, Patient Rights and Responsibilities, Important Message from Medicare (IMM), Medicare Outpatient Observation Notice (MOON), Notice of Privacy Practices, Medicare Secondary Payer Questionnaire (MSPQ), and Advanced Beneficiary Notice (ABN), and obtaining necessary signatures. The position may also involve scheduling appointments, coordinating cancellations, reschedules, and wait list requests. Providing accurate information about test preparations, arrival times, and directions is also a key duty. The role emphasizes creating a welcoming environment through excellent customer service, greeting patients, responding to requests, answering phones, and offering assistance with transportation, directions, and interpreter services. Monitoring and working assigned electronic health record work queues is also a responsibility.
