This role is responsible for creating the initial electronic health record, which is foundational for the patient's medical record used by the entire healthcare team. It also focuses on preventing duplicate medical records, which can lead to safety and billing issues, and ensuring patient identification compliance with accrediting bodies. The position involves checking in and registering patients, gathering and verifying demographic, guarantor, and insurance information, and collecting co-pays. Accurate information collection is crucial for timely payment and preventing billing problems. The role requires maintaining patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA. The Patient Service Representative needs to understand insurance basics, recognize different plans, know which plans Advocate Health contracts with, and determine when a statement of financial responsibility is needed. They will discuss financial information with patients and refer them to Financial Advocates when necessary. The role also involves ensuring compliance with government regulations such as HIPAA, EMTALA, Consent for Treatment, Patient Rights and Responsibilities, Important Message from Medicare (IMM), Medicare Outpatient Observation Notice (MOON), Notice of Privacy Practices, Medicare Secondary Payer Questionnaire (MSPQ), and Advanced Beneficiary Notice (ABN), obtaining necessary signatures. Additionally, the position may involve scheduling appointments, coordinating cancellations and reschedules, and providing detailed information about test preparations, arrival times, and guidelines. A key aspect of the role is creating a welcoming and professional environment through exceptional customer service, greeting patients, answering phones, and offering assistance with transportation, interpreter services, and other needs. The representative will also monitor and work assigned electronic health record work queues according to department processes.
