About The Position

Under the direction of the Registered Nurse, LPN, or Paramedic, the Patient Safety Attendant is responsible for providing 1:1 monitoring with continuous visual observation (either in-person or on a video monitor) for adult or pediatric behavioral health patients or patients at risk for suicide, falls risk, altered mental status, and delirium. The role will focus on providing a safe and comfortable environment for those patients at risk of harming themselves or those with altered mental status. The Patient Safety Attendant will be able to demonstrate sensitivity and respect for the patient, family, and/or significant other(s), maintain a calm and confident manner, identify risks such as falls or self-harm and promptly alert the team to intervene early, and possess good communication, listening, and observation skills. When assigned to the 1:1 observation of a patient, the attendant must not leave the patient until relieved by another staff person and never leave the patient unattended unless directed by the nurse. The role involves documenting all pertinent information, adhering to hospital policies including but not limited to bed/chair alarms, fall prevention, delirium and safe patient handling, maintaining infection prevention standards, collaborating closely with the healthcare team to foster a culture of compassion, respect, and teamwork, supporting and participating in the organization’s continuous quality improvement program, and recognizing a patient emergency and responding appropriately. The attendant may also assist in preparing patient meal trays and with ambulation and mobilization activities for independent patients. The position requires availability to work shifts including day, nights, weekends, and holidays.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED)
  • Demonstrates ability to perform as a team member and effective communicator.
  • Must be 18 Years of age or older.

Nice To Haves

  • American Heart Association Heart Saver or BLS within 6 months of hire
  • Management of Aggressive Behavior within 6 months of hire

Responsibilities

  • Maintains appropriate boundaries with patients.
  • Always ensures continuous supervision of patients.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient information.
  • Adheres to relevant policies, procedures and standards.
  • Assists patients with basic needs such as ordering meals, eating, mobility and bathroom assistance for appropriate patients.
