About The Position

This role is responsible for maintaining patient safety from self and the environment. The Patient Safety Assistant will assist patients with meals, feeding, ambulating, and activities of daily living as instructed by the RN. This position requires maintaining documentation of behavior observations and safety concerns, reporting them to the RN. The assistant will provide clear, simple directions to patients, reinforce teaching, and orient patients. They will utilize verbal de-escalation techniques to redirect patients and follow RN directions regarding patient and environmental safety. The role also involves recognizing and reporting abnormal observations, monitoring and adjusting the environment for safety, and knowing emergency plans. Patient care and tasks are performed using job skills and knowledge specific to the patient's age and developmental level, assessing physical needs and functional status.

Requirements

Good communication skills both verbally and written
Complete necessary patient documentation
Willing to work varied hours and some weekends
Maintain and enforce strict patient confidentiality and respect patient and family rights
Willingness to take additional courses as requested
Must be physically able to frequently stoop, bend, reach
Able to frequently lift 50 pounds or more
Varied activities most frequently sitting without falling asleep
Must be able to remain calm under stressful situations
Follow universal precautions for infection control
Maintain knowledge and practice of safe body mechanics
Completes skills check list and complete Age Appropriate Competencies as per Sky Lakes policy and procedures
Demonstrates competence by ongoing completion of any or all of the following: proficiency testing, skill demonstration, practice of core standards for service excellence.

Responsibilities

Maintains patient safety from self and environment.
Assists the patient with meals, feeding and ambulating; activities of daily living per instructions from the RN.
Maintains documentation of behavior observations and safety concern and reports to RN.
Gives clear simple directions to patient(s) reinforce teaching and orientation to patient.
Uses verbal de-escalation techniques to redirect patients.
Follows direction from the RN about safety for the patient and the environment of care.
Recognizes and reports abnormal observations.
Monitors and adjusts environment to maintain safety in the environment of care.
Knows the fire plan and escape routes for patient and self.
Provides patient care and performs tasks using job skills and growth and develop knowledge specific to the patient’s age and/or developmental level.
Assesses physical needs and functional status of the patient in order to provide patient care.
Performs other duties as assigned.
