About The Position

The Patient Registration Clerk is responsible for processing Patient Registration applications received from all RSBCIHI facilities. This role involves registering new patients, verifying and collecting eligibility information, checking patients in for all departments, collecting demographic information, updating files, collecting and verifying insurance information, referring uninsured patients to Patient Services for screenings, and performing various other duties. The position requires the ability to work in a very fast-paced environment, multi-task, and travel within the RSBCIHI organization when needed. A strong understanding of HIPAA compliance and patient confidentiality is essential. The clerk must be able to work with the Indian Community and be sensitive to the Indian Culture and its needs.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Filing skills.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Clear understanding of HIPPA compliance and patient confidentiality.
  • Ability to work in a very fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to multi-task.
  • Ability to travel within the RSBCIHI organization when needed.
  • Current CPR (BLS Provider) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or the American Red Cross (certification may be obtained prior to orientation).
  • Knowledge of basic computer skills.
  • Must possess a valid California driver’s license and a safe driving record.
  • A current DMV printout is required.
  • Ability to perform routine duties independently, following prescribed regulations, guidelines, and well-established procedures.
  • Ability to communicate with a wide variety of Indian patients plus a wide variety of health providers.
  • Must be able to work with the Indian Community, and be sensitive to the Indian culture and its needs.

Nice To Haves

  • A minimum one year experience in a medical front office or healthcare administrative roll.
  • Experience with NextGen system.
  • Insurance knowledge and verification.
  • One year verifiable experience that could have been gained in a position where a combination of clerical duties, i.e., typing, filing, meeting and dealing with people, were accomplished and computer experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Process all new patients, modifications, deletes/merges on all updates, edits and alerts received, and send them to Indian Health Service.
  • Maintain patient records, keeping files and statistical data up to date regarding patient registration.
  • Type letters required for eligibility and maintain a follow-up system for all documents requested.
  • Assemble completed patient registration documentation for managers’ authorization in difficult cases.
  • Operate the NextGen system for insurance verification, modifying entries, and handling various edits and alerts.
  • Maintain confidentiality, security, and safety of patient records at all times.
  • Meet and deal effectively with people, making clear oral and written requests for documentation.
  • Work directly with tribal offices, Bureau of Indian Affairs, and medical facilities.
  • Work with the Indian community and be sensitive to the Indian culture.
  • Effectively interrelate with all staff members and patients.
