About The Position

Responsible for timely collection, validation, and entry of all demographic and insurance information necessary to support accurate billing for emergency department services. Provides excellent customer service, ensures regulatory compliance and performs related duties as required to facilitate effective patient care. Follows established department guidelines to ensure accuracy, efficiency, and timeliness of patient registrations and throughout in the emergency department. Greets all customers, including patients, family members and visitors in a caring and professional manner. Conducts “mini-registration” of non-trauma patients upon arrival, consisting of collecting name, obtaining and scanning photo identification, and reason for visit. Functions as receptionist and directs patients and visitors; provides visitor passes. Uses the ED Tracker system functionality appropriately. Demonstrates knowledge of facility regulations regarding visitors. Register patients by collecting and entering accurate demographic and insurance information including verification of certain insurance types. Performs registration of patients using computer cart on wheels in patient rooms. Ensures all pertinent identification is scanned into the EMR and document imaging system; e.g. photo identification, insurance card(s). Maintains a solid working knowledge of third-party specifics relative to the Emergency Department, reducing financial risk for all parties; maximize delivery of care. Performs clerical duties related to admission, discharge, transfer using the system. Determines insurance eligibility status using electronic data exchanges/third-party eligibility websites. Determine and collect guarantor payments (co-payments) due at time of service, when permissible. Obtains all necessary signatures on treatment & financial consents. Manage communication in the various areas of the Emergency Department using proper telephone etiquette. Provides customer service and wayfinding by assisting patient, family and visitors as needed. Serves as a liaison to ancillary departments as needed by completing STAT registrations as needed, including but not limited to bloodwork for kidney transplant. Assist in providing registration workflow training of newly hired department caregivers. Always maintains patient confidentiality. Performs assigned work safely, adhering to established safety rules and practices. Reports on any unsafe activities, conditions, hazards, or safety violations that may cause injury to oneself, other employees, patients, and visitors in a timely manner. Perform other related duties as required.

Requirements

  • High School graduate or equivalent
  • Two years' experience in a medical, financial, or customers service environment.
  • Proficient in use of personal computer, excellent accurate typing skills.
  • General knowledge of medical terminology.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in a patient care environment preferred.
  • Knowledge of Health Care Plans, verification methods, and billing practices preferred.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.
