About The Position

The Patient Monitor Observer role involves continuously observing patients for any movements or behaviors that might require assistance, such as attempting to get out of bed or showing signs of distress. When a concerning event occurs, the observer follows established guidelines and immediately contacts nursing staff to ensure patient safety. This position is crucial for maintaining patient safety through constant vigilance and prompt communication of any concerns. The Monitor Tech also provides support services, including basic computer keyboarding, assembling patient charts, coordinating with other departments for ordered tests and procedures, and stocking supplies. Additionally, the role involves monitoring and interpreting patient heart rhythms and vital signs, following set algorithm parameters, and responding to alarms by communicating appropriately. The position requires knowledge of organizational policies and procedures, and may involve distributing medications to licensed personnel, performing reception duties such as answering phones, and using multi-line telephone systems and spectra-links. The ideal candidate must be organized, able to prioritize work, handle stress, perform detailed work efficiently, possess good interpersonal and strong communication skills, and be able to collaborate effectively with team members. Depending on the location, this role may also provide continuous observation and surveillance of assigned patients, summoning nursing staff if assistance is needed, interpreting alarming events, and following through with appropriate communication.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or general equivalency diploma (GED) required.
  • Experience in healthcare is helpful.
  • Previous experience with clerical/business services, communications equipment, and computer entry desirable but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Observe patients for any movements or behaviors that might require help, such as trying to get out of bed or showing signs of distress.
  • Follow set guidelines and immediately contact the nursing staff when something concerning happens.
  • Ensure patients are safe by watching them continuously and communicating any concerns right away.
  • Provide support services.
  • Perform basic computer keyboarding skills.
  • Tear down and assemble patient charts as appropriate.
  • Call other departments to inform them of ordered tests and procedures as needed.
  • Stock supplies.
  • Monitor and interpret patient heart rhythms and vital signs.
  • Follow set algorithm parameters that may raise alarms.
  • Interpret alarms and follow through with appropriate communication as needed.
  • Know how to use organizational policies and procedures.
  • May have access to medications for purposes of distribution to licensed personnel.
  • May include reception duties i.e. answering phones, use of multi-line telephone system and spectra-links.
  • Be organized and have ability to prioritize work, function under and handle stress and ability to do detailed work efficiently.
  • Have good interpersonal skills, strong communication skills and able to collaborate with other team members.
  • Depending on location, may also be providing continuous observation and surveillance of assigned patients.
