About The Position

This role assesses patient financial needs, assists patients, and collects deposits according to the Froedtert Hospital Billing and Collection Policy in a professional and courteous manner. The Financial Counselor screens patients and assists with applications for applicable governmental programs, the health insurance exchange, and/or the Froedtert Health financial assistance program. This position emphasizes customer service and positive interpersonal relations while working closely with Admitting/Registration, Preauthorization, Care Management, appropriate department personnel in Patient Financial Services, and MCW Clinical Practice Services in addressing financial responsibilities. Financial Counselors at Froedtert play a vital role in helping patients understand and manage the financial aspects of their healthcare. They work closely with patients to assess eligibility and assist with applications for BadgerCare, Medicaid, Marketplace plans, and Froedtert’s Financial Assistance Program, provide cost estimates and prepayment information for upcoming services, meet with patients in various settings—bedside, in-office, or by phone—to address billing questions, and serve as a liaison between patients, the preauthorization team, and clinical departments to ensure seamless communication and support.

Requirements

  • A minimum of 1 year of experience in healthcare/revenue cycle functions (or other business office), case management, or social work is required.
  • High School diploma or equivalent is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience using Microsoft Word, Excel and other software programs is preferred.
  • Experience using Epic in a healthcare environment is preferred.
  • Experience in social work or case management is preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree in social work, case management, healthcare administration, business administration, or other related fields is preferred.
  • State of Wisconsin and Federal Certified Application Counselor Designation is preferred.
  • In lieu of Certified Application Counselor Designation, current Licensed Health Insurance Agent is preferred.
