About The Position

A Patient Financial Advocate (PFA) provides financial counseling to uninsured/ underinsured patients, by determining eligibility for IMH patients and individuals in the communities we serve. Patient Financial Advocates assist patients by processing and submitting documentation and applications for various medical assistance programs, such as: State/ Federal public benefits, ACA insurance education, and internal/ external financial assistance/aide programs. A Patient Financial Advocate will provide general insurance education, price quotes to potential patients, and assist with payments and payment arrangements. Schedule - Weekend evening. Thursday through Monday 3pm - 11:30pm.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Certified Application Counselor (CAC) Certification
  • One (1) Year experience as a Patient Financial Advocate
  • Pass the Level Two (2) Exam with a score of 90% or greater
  • No Verbal or Written Consultation or Corrective action in the previous 12 months
  • Completion on the IMH Mentor Training
  • Completion of HFMA Courses – Overview of Revenue Cycle and Patient Financial Communcation: Advance of Service

Responsibilities

  • Interviews patients and consumers, screening for available internal and Public Benefit Programs, applying for appropriate program; in person and remote.
  • Completes applications for Public Benefit programs, submitting with required documents.
  • Process and determine requests for internal and external financial assistance programs
  • Financially clear patients for elective surgeries/services.
  • Assists with co-pay assistance program application process.
  • Provides general insurance education
  • Provides Affordable Care Act (ACA) insurance education and navigation.
  • Point of service collections and establish payment plans.
  • Assist with the training and mentorship of new hires and tenured staff and is a department Subject Matter Expert (SME) assisting with workflows and establishing best practices.
