About The Position

Patient Financial Advocate – Inpatient Authorization Unit Patient Financial Advocate Unit | Inpatient Authorization The Patient Financial Advocate supports the Associate Director of Admissions within the Inpatient Authorization Unit by ensuring accurate patient registration, insurance verification, and timely authorization processing. This role plays a critical part in facilitating access to care while maintaining compliance with payer requirements and supporting clinical and case management teams.

Requirements

  • Insurance verification and authorization processing
  • Medical terminology and coding knowledge (ICD‑9, CPT)
  • Patient registration and pre‑registration workflows
  • Strong customer service and communication skills
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in data entry
  • Experience using electronic health record systems (EPIC preferred)
  • 2–4 years of experience in a healthcare setting
  • Strong knowledge of insurance authorization processes and coverage types, including Medi‑Cal, HMO, IPA, and PPO plans
  • Experience working with EPIC or similar EHR systems preferred

Responsibilities

  • Support the Associate Director of Admissions within the Patient Financial Advocate Unit – Inpatient Authorization.
  • Schedule inpatient and outpatient appointments across multiple clinic locations.
  • Accurately verify, enter, and maintain patient demographic and insurance information.
  • Verify insurance coverage for Medicare and PPO plans, including co‑pay and benefit details; working knowledge of HMO, IPA, and PPO plans required.
  • Communicate with payors to notify them of patient admissions, obtain authorizations, and submit required documentation via fax or electronic systems.
  • Collaborate with case management and clinical teams to support authorization and utilization review processes.
  • Utilize ICD‑9, CPT codes, and medical terminology to accurately input clinical and authorization data into healthcare systems (training provided).
  • Complete pre‑registration activities and process cash collections in accordance with organizational policies.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory and payer requirements while maintaining excellent customer service for patients and internal stakeholders.
