About The Position

The Patient Escort is responsible for transporting patients and/or family members to ensure accessibility to services such as medical and social services. This role involves communicating any patient issues to the Outreach Manager or Director, utilizing safety measures during transports, and ensuring the cleanliness and maintenance of company vehicles. The Patient Escort will accompany patients to medical facilities, assist with appointments, interpret instructions, and guide them to and from various locations. The position requires maintaining patient confidentiality, interacting positively with patients and staff, attending department meetings, and delivering medications, supplies, and educational materials. The role also involves operating wheelchair lifts, reporting to work promptly, and notifying supervisors of any late transportation. This position requires working weekends, early and late hours beyond routine operations, and performing other assigned duties.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience working with people with disabilities.
  • Job requires a lot of traveling from site to site to relieve work for other drivers during illness, leave, and to meet patient needs.
  • Valid CPR (BLS Provider) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or the American Red Cross. Certification may be obtained prior to orientation.
  • Must successfully complete a defensive driving course within one year of hire.
  • Must have clear and effective oral communication skills.
  • Must possess a valid California driver’s license and a safe driving record.
  • A current DMV printout is required before hiring, and then biannually.
  • Must be insurable by the corporation’s insurance carrier.
  • Must demonstrate auto and patient safety.
  • Ability to work a variable schedule.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality procedures.
  • Ability to be free of communicable diseases.
  • Ability to maintain personal cleanliness.
  • Ability to be mature and responsible; take instructions; follow directions.
  • Ability to follow instructions and exercise independent judgement.
  • Ability to manage and maintain personal work schedule using time management skills.
  • Ability to work with the Indian population in the service area and gain their confidence and acceptance; have empathetic understanding of and willingness to work with Native American population in the service area; be sensitive to the Indian culture and its needs.

  • Ability to read and write at level for satisfactory job performance.
  • Have basic computer skills.
  • Enter appointments into system, respond to emails, print documents, etc.

  • The Patient Escort may provide coverage for other drivers during illness, leave, staffing shortages, or periods of increased patient transportation needs.
  • Must be able to work with the Indian community and be sensitive to the Indian culture and its needs.

Responsibilities

  • Transport patients and/or family in situations where there is no family member available to assume this responsibility in order to assure accessibility to services, i.e., medical, social services, etc.
  • Communicates to Outreach Manager or Director of any problems or findings regarding patients that warrant follow-up care.
  • Utilizes safety measures in all transports, i.e., locks vehicle when carrying prescription, locks wheelchairs when carrying handicapped, etc.
  • For reasons of safety for infants and toddlers up to 40 pounds, infant care seats shall be used when they are transported in company-owned or leased vehicles.
  • Safety belts shall be worn by Patient Escorts and all patients during patient transportation or other official business of the program.
  • Responsible for the end of the month reports, mileage logs, and auto inspection forms which are due on the third working day of each month to immediate supervisor.
  • Responsible for consistently maintaining vehicle in a clean and tidy manner.
  • Preventive maintenance done on a timely basis.
  • Responsible for accompanying all patients to medical facility, assisting them in making appointments, interpreting instructions, and for guiding them to and from the building, vehicles and different offices.
  • Does not compromise patient confidentiality.
  • Positive and courteous interactions with patients and families, as well as other staff.
  • Responsible for attending quarterly department meetings.
  • Responsible for delivery of medications, patient supplies or equipment, newsletters, pamphlets, and other educational materials, as assigned.
  • Safely and properly operates vehicle’s wheelchair lift with consideration for patients’ disabilities and abilities.
  • Responsible for reporting to work promptly at scheduled time.
  • Uses sick leave appropriately, per organizational policies.
  • Responsible for notifying supervisor between 4:00 P.M. and 5:00 P.M. of late transportation on a daily basis.
  • This position shall require working on the weekends, early and late hours beyond routine operation hours.
  • Other duties as assigned.
