About The Position

This position involves a variety of duties related to the transportation of patients throughout the hospital. The role also includes assisting nursing staff with patient transfers, collecting and delivering items between various hospital departments, and cleaning and maintaining transport equipment. Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English.
  • Good inter-personal skills and a customer service orientation.

Nice To Haves

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification within 6 months of hire.
  • Six months’ experience in a hospital environment.

Responsibilities

  • Escorts ambulatory patients.
  • Transports patients by wheelchair, stretcher, or bed.
  • Verifies patient identification using two identifiers and signs off on Safe Patient Transport Forms before transport.
  • Monitors and responds to basic patient needs during transport to ensure comfort and safety.
  • Provides appropriate handoff communication upon patient delivery.
  • Assists nursing staff and/or lift technicians in moving and positioning patients using various lift devices.
  • Performs lateral transfers of patients on precaution status, using personal protective equipment and following infection control procedures.
  • Delivers stretchers, beds, cribs, and wheelchairs as needed.
  • Performs deep cleaning of all transport equipment on a biannual basis.
  • Sanitizes transport vehicles and ancillary equipment between patient use.
  • Transports patient specimens to and from the Lab and Pathology, and blood products to/from the Blood Bank.
  • Transports contaminated equipment to Sterile Processing.
  • Delivers other materials such as medical records, pharmaceuticals, X-ray films, sterile items, and miscellaneous reports.
  • Checks E-cylinders (portable O2 tanks) for content and distributes/exchanges them throughout the hospital.
  • Interacts with a web-based dispatch system (TDSS) via alpha paging for job assignments.
  • Maintains individual Transporter Trip Log and other statistical records.
  • May participate in Emergency Department triage transport assignment during disaster situations, including CODE HELP.
  • Assists in the transport of trauma patients and deceased victims to the morgue.
  • Guides and assists patients through the decontamination unit.
  • May assume the role of a dispatcher if trained and directed.
  • Complies with established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives.
  • Attends meetings, conferences, and seminars as required.
  • Demonstrates use of Quality Improvement in daily operations.
  • Complies with all health and safety regulations and requirements.

  • Maintains regular, reliable, and predictable attendance.
  • Performs other similar and related duties as required or directed.
