About The Position

Join Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital in Vero Beach, Florida, as a Patient Companion in the Float Pool. The hospital provides family-centric, community-focused care, and the Float Pool caregiver works with diverse patient populations across multiple units, departments, and locations. The role supports RNs, physicians, dietitians, and other staff in coordinating and fulfilling treatment plans while providing compassionate patient care.

The caregiver works nights from 6:45 p.m. to 7:15 a.m., including every other weekend and two holidays per year. The position may involve direct and indirect care for one or two patients, or constant safety observation for three to four patients when assigned to a closed unit. Caregivers follow required precautions and use personal protective equipment as needed. Employment offers are followed by controlled-substance testing, and caregivers must comply with the health system’s annual influenza prevention program or obtain an approved exemption.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• Completion of a hospital-based patient companion training program, equivalent experience, enrollment at an accredited school of nursing with completion of a nursing fundamentals course, or completion of a hospital-based NA/PC orientation.
• Knowledge and understanding of basic patient care activities, such as basic hygiene, skin care, and vital signs.
• Ability to meet the stated physical demands, including moving and lifting patients, extensive standing and walking, and exerting 20 to 50 pounds occasionally, 10 to 25 pounds frequently, and up to 10 pounds constantly.

Nice To Haves

• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association or American Red Cross; if not held, it must be obtained within three months of hire.

Responsibilities

• Assist with direct and indirect care for one to two patients, including rooming, taking vital signs, measuring weight, and checking pulse oximetry.
• Provide constant safety observation for three to four patients when assigned to a closed unit.
• Help ensure patient safety by checking that catheters, tubes, and other medical equipment have not been removed or disconnected.
• Accompany and assist patients at all times, including during transport, tests, transfers, and ambulation.
• Collect patient specimens for laboratory testing.
• Identify and report changes in patient status to an RN or physician.
• Follow protocols and initiate CPR and other emergency measures as required.
• Acknowledge patient concerns and needs and notify appropriate staff for assistance.
• Complete documentation and provide hand-off communication to caregivers responsible for the patient.
