About The Position

St. Luke’s Health-Memorial provides quality innovative health care in East Texas, offering over a quarter of a million patient services annually across hospitals in Lufkin, Livingston, and San Augustine. The Patient Companion role is a vital member of the healthcare team, focused on optimizing patient safety and well-being under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse. This role involves continuous oversight of assigned patients, assisting with personal hygiene, mobility, and requests, and diligently monitoring their physical and emotional condition. Success in this role requires enthusiasm to help others, a patient-first mindset, keen assessment skills, critical thinking, and a sense of urgency, thriving in a fast-paced clinical environment. The ideal candidate is compassionate and comfortable interacting with patients who may be emotional, panicked, stressed, or in pain, and is eager to work calmly and efficiently to respond to situations.

Requirements

  • High School Graduate general studies (or GED), upon hire
  • Basic Life Support - CPR, within 14 days
  • Compassionate and comfortable interacting with patients who might be emotional, panicked, stressed, or in pain

Responsibilities

  • Maintain continuous oversight of assigned patients
  • Directly assist with their personal hygiene, mobility, and requests
  • Diligently monitor their physical and emotional condition
  • Maintain patient safety for patients at risk for self harm including but not limited to those on suicide precautions, those at risk for falls, or to keep medical tubes and lines intact
  • Protect the patient's dignity at all times
  • Contact nursing staff immediately of any concern regarding the patient's condition
  • Ensure coverage of duties during all periods of relief, i.e., breaks or lunch
  • Provide comfort measures, i.e., blanket, pillow, positioning
  • Prepare patient for meals, feeds patient and offers fluids as appropriate and verifies with nursing staff
