About The Position

The Patient Care Technician provides direct patient care, including personal hygiene, vital sign monitoring, and documentation in the electronic medical record (EMR). They promote patient comfort, security, and assist with rehabilitation plans, including ambulation and activities of daily living. The role also involves fall prevention, safe patient handling, responding to patient needs, fostering teamwork, and adhering to hospital policies and infection control standards. Additionally, the technician may perform laundry services and provide diversional activities for swing bed patients, orient new personnel, collect specimens, and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.

Requirements

  • Accurately documents care given to patients in the electronic medical record (EMR)
  • Informs charge/bedside nurse of abnormal vital signs (per policy).
  • Promotes comfort, security and assists in the rehabilitation plan within their scope of practice including ambulation, simple range of motion and assistance with activities of daily living.
  • Assists in fall prevention per patient’s plan of care including activating/responding to alarms.
  • Follows safe patient handling guidelines to position/mobilize patients. Safely transfers patients according to guidelines using patient lifts.
  • Promptly responds to patient communication system (call lights), bed/chair alarms and unit communication system.
  • Fosters teamwork and interacts with peers to maintain an ongoing working rapport across all shifts.
  • Performs hourly/purposeful rounding per hospital policy.
  • Adheres to “No Pass Zone” policy for patient safety.
  • Launders swing bed patient laundry during HS hours as per request.
  • Provides diversional activities for swing bed patients.
  • Orients and instructs new personnel to policies and procedures and unit operations
  • Adheres to infection control standards to prevent the spread of infection.
  • Complies with departmental policies and procedures. Complies with The Joint Commission regulations and guidelines.
  • Collects specimens within scope of practice and per policy.
  • Attends in-services to keep current and knowledgeable; remains compliant with requirement of mandatories in the learning management system as assigned by nurse educators or Director of Inpatient Nursing.

Responsibilities

  • Provides personal hygiene to patients: bathes, dresses and toilets patients as indicated by their needs including hair care, shaving and assists patients with personal and dental hygiene. Assures the patients are properly and comfortably clothed.
