About The Position

University of Iowa Health Care is seeking Patient Care Technicians for the Medicine Specialty Unit (6RC). This unit is part of the Medical Surgical Services (MSS) Division and focuses on the care of adults with a variety of medical diagnoses. The unit utilizes a multidisciplinary approach to patient care, fostering teamwork among physicians, nursing staff, therapy staff, social work, and other consulting disciplines to provide comprehensive, patient-centered care in a dynamic and fast-paced environment. The unit promotes a healthy work environment that allows staff to thrive and grow personally and professionally.

Requirements

  • Ability to read, write and follow instructions.

Responsibilities

  • Independently obtain and record vital signs including temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure.
  • Carry out medical asepsis when performing skills and tasks including phlebotomy, peripheral IV removal, & Foley catheter removal and cares for patients who are medically isolated.
  • Perform simple diagnostic and therapeutic procedures such as enemas, preoperative preparation of the skin, dressing changes, collecting specimens, applying binders, braces, etc.
  • Perform special duties as taught and directed by the nurse in charge including phlebotomy, ECG lead/12 lead placement, and brace/pin site cares.
  • Assist with patient admission, transfers, and discharges.
  • Directly provide for patients' personal hygiene and comfort.
  • Turn, position and ambulate patients.
  • Transport patients, equipment, specimens, and supplies.
  • Feed patients, serve drinking water and nourishments, and record patients' intake.
  • Assist patients with bedpans and urinals and record output.
  • Participate in nursing care conferences; report pertinent patient information and incidents to nurse in charge.
  • Provide for patient comfort measures through social interactions.
  • Share responsibility for preparation, proper use and care of equipment and supplies, and for neatness and cleanliness of unit.
  • May assemble and maintain equipment and supplies in preparation for various diagnostic or treatment procedures performed by physicians or nurse.
  • Clean areas per designated guidelines and standards demonstrating proper use of approved disinfectants, cleaning products, and care of the housekeeping equipment.
  • Stock and supply patient rooms and nursing units.
