Functions as part of the dialysis health care team to provide safe and effective dialysis therapy under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse, following organization policies, procedures, training, and applicable regulations. The role is responsible for setting up and operating hemodialysis machines, helping maintain a safe and clean working environment, supporting the Quality Enhancement Program (QEP) and Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) activities, and contributing to process improvements and patient satisfaction. The technician welcomes and monitors patients, assesses vascular access, performs cannulation and delegated or legally permitted heparin administration, obtains and records vital signs and weights, initiates and discontinues treatments, monitors patient responses, manages prescribed machine settings, and reports changes or unusual findings to a registered nurse or supervisor. The role also includes specimen collection and preparation, treatment and chart documentation, infection-control practices, equipment disinfection, supply management, and assistance with training applicable direct patient care staff under nurse supervision. In the Transitional Care Unit, the technician follows newly admitted patients through their first four weeks of dialysis, reinforces education, coordinates care with appropriate staff, supports patient understanding of home dialysis and treatment options, helps coordinate transitions to a selected modality, and assists with supply ordering and inventory. The work includes desk and computer tasks and direct interaction with patients, facility staff, and physicians. Travel between assigned facilities and community locations is required, and travel to regional, Business Unit, or Corporate meetings may be required. The work environment is a healthcare facility with controlled air temperature and moderate noise levels, with possible exposure to infectious and contagious diseases or materials. Direct care regularly involves heavy lifting and moving patients and assisting with ambulation. The position requires frequent, prolonged standing and bending; occasional pushing or pulling of equipment using up to 15 pounds of force; frequent lifting and lowering of solutions up to 30 pounds; and occasional lifting up to 40 pounds to a height of five feet. Assistance and material-assist devices are available for heavier items. Employees must take the Ishihara Color Blindness test as a condition of employment; failing the test does not preclude employment, and reasonable accommodations may be considered.
