The Patient Care Technician (PCT) provides direct patient care, assisting with procedures and daily living activities. They support physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies, and report patient status changes to the Registered Nurse (RN). The PCT performs core nursing assistant responsibilities, including blood glucose monitoring, taking vital signs, input/output tracking, specimen collection, and Foley care. Additionally, they may perform tasks such as phlebotomy, EKG administration, simple dressing changes, Foley catheter removal, bladder scans, straight catheterization, and IV catheter removal, depending on departmental needs and operational requirements. The role involves ensuring equipment functions correctly, communicating effectively with other departments, and maintaining professional relationships. PCTs contribute to unit activities like responding to call lights, passing meals, and transporting patients. They are expected to receive feedback constructively, identify learning needs, and actively seek to improve their skills and performance. Patient and family education is provided under the RN's direction. Restraint application, monitoring, and removal may also be part of the role. The PCT must demonstrate cultural competence, understand workplace safety, and maintain accountability and commitment to patients and colleagues. Adherence to all policies, procedures, and safety precautions, including standard precautions, is mandatory. They are encouraged to suggest improvements, support departmental projects, and document accurately and efficiently in the medical record.
