About The Position

The Patient Care Technician (PCT) performs patient care tasks and duties which do not require a license. The PCT is a trained member of the unit based team who supports the on-going delivery of care as identified by the multidisciplinary patient management team in H9 Nephrology/Surgical Specialties. H9 Nephrology/Surgical Specialties is a 30 bed medical/surgical adult inpatient unit serving general medical and surgical patients from adolescent age to geriatrics. The unit specializes in the care of the adult renal and liver failure patients, solid organ transplant patients, hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis patients, general surgery patients, colorectal and urology patients.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED and successful completion of patient care technician course within 3 months of hire.
  • Must have excellent communication skills, a bility to follow oral instructions, basic computer skills, strong work ethics and accountability.
  • Must be able to lift 100 lbs. to waist height.
  • The Patient Care Technician (PCT) works under the direct supervision of the Registered Nurse(s) and performs tasks and duties which do not require a license, professional judgment or intervention.
  • The PCT must pass the required competencies.
  • The PCT works within the Department of Nursing standards.
  • The PCT adheres to UAMS clinical programs, policies, procedures and standards and guest care guidelines.
  • Employees in this role must be fitted for, capable of donning and performing routine tasks in personal protective equipment to include N95 masks, Powered Air Purifying Respirators (PAPR) or Controlled Air Purifying Respirators (CAPR).

Nice To Haves

  • Certification as a nursing assistant or military corpsman.
  • Six (6) months or more of Patient care experience in acute care setting.

Responsibilities

  • Obtains patient report and has on-going communication with R.N. regarding patient care/changes in condition; Informs nurse of patient requests or complaints.
  • Assists with admission, transfer, and discharge of patients. Transports patients to other areas of the hospital as directed.
  • Carries out the Plan of Care for Patient using a Multidisciplinary Approach as Delegated by Team Leader. Communicates effectively with other team members to facilitate patient care. Accepts directions from R.N.s and team members. Follows through on delegated patient care activities.
  • Provides appropriate grooming/oral hygiene and comfort measures and assists patients with activities (ambulation, up in chair, turn and reposition).
  • Documents all patient care activities/tasks, vital signs, ADL, wave tests, I&O's accurately and timely and per unit and department standards.
  • Assists patients and visitors with information and/or solutions to problems. Serves as resources person to support department members in performance of duties. Notifies appropriate staff members of problems requiring prompt intervention.
  • May perform other duties as assigned.
