The Patient Care Technician provides routine patient care and supports department services in accordance with established policies and procedures. They may be directed by the nurse or physician to assure the highest degree of quality patient care. Responsibilities include UPMC nursing core nursing assistant duties such as ADLs (bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, ambulating, turning and repositioning patients), point of care testing (including blood glucose), weights, vital signs, I&O, telemetry monitor application/reapplication, and HAC & PSI prevention (TEDs/SCDs). Additionally, they may perform simple dressings, apply and remove restraints, use a bladder scan, collect specimens, and provide ticket to ride services. All competencies must be achieved. Based on department operational needs, Patient Care Technicians may also perform advanced skills such as phlebotomy/venipuncture, peripheral IV removal, indwelling Foley catheter removal, basic arrhythmia interpretation, 12-lead EKG, and NG tube clamping and removal.
