The Patient Care Technician provides direct, age-specific care to a patient or group of patients based on medical orders and plan of care under the direction of area leadership, RN or licensed independent practitioner. This role involves providing safe and direct care to patients in their assigned work location, making appropriate age adjustments as needed, and monitoring patients’ conditions while providing updates to the health care team. The PCT will provide direct and indirect care to patients with and without medical/surgical complications to meet their comfort, personal hygiene, and safety needs, in accordance with nursing and medical plans of care and UVA Health Nursing and Hospital policy and procedure. Additionally, the role ensures the assigned clinical location is maintained as a safe, clean, stocked environment, and maintains supplies, educational material, equipment, sterilization of supplies, instruments, and the environment to promote quality, safe patient care outcomes. The PCT contributes to the patient experience by accurately identifying the patient, observing safety goals, and reporting to a licensed independent practitioner, manager, and/or Registered Nurses. They identify and report physical and mental responses posing harm to the Registered Nurse, and obtain and record initial and ongoing patient information throughout the plan of care, including admissions as outlined by UVA Health policy. The role also involves obtaining or assisting in the collection of specimens for diagnostic or waived tests, attending all mandatory in-services and training, and ensuring patient safety in job functions and through participation in hospital, department, or unit patient safety initiatives. The PCT demonstrates ASPIRE Values in all human interactions and teamwork in the delivery of patient care, recognizing the importance of time-sensitive issues. Other duties may be assigned.
