About The Position

Sentara Norfolk General Hospital is hiring a Patient Care Technician (PCT) for the Oncology Unit. This is a Flexible Time, Night Shift (12-hour shift) position, working from 7 PM to 7 AM. This unit cares for Medical and Surgical oncology patients in an inpatient, 36-bed unit, serving as both an oncology unit and intermediate care. The PCT will support the nursing team with chemotherapy and hospice patients. The role involves providing patient care, supporting daily living activities, taking vital signs, assisting with mobility and ambulation, performing phlebotomy, point of care testing, EKG testing, peripheral IV removal, specimen collection, and foley catheter insertion and removal. The PCT will also comply with patient safety practices under the direction of the RN, observe patients' conditions, and document findings accurately and in a timely manner, reporting any changes to the nurse or medical staff.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent (Required)
  • Sentara Care Partner Certification Program, or
  • Successful completion of the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), or
  • National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA), or
  • National Patient Care Technician (NCPCT), or
  • Completion of US Hospital Corps School, or
  • Emergency Services to include EMR, EMS, EMT, AEMT and Paramedic, or
  • Current student enrolled in a clinical program (beyond prerequisites) having completed at least one semester of a Registered Nurse (RN), Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), Respiratory Therapist (RT) or Physical Therapist (PT) program, or
  • Current work experience within the last three years as a Patient Care Technician (PCT) or Nursing Assistant
  • AHA Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 90 days of hire

Responsibilities

  • Provides patient care, supports independent and dependent activities of daily living
  • Takes vital signs, mobility and ambulation
  • Performs phlebotomy, point of care testing, EKG testing, peripheral IV removal, specimen collection, and foley catheter insertion and removal
  • Complies with patient safety practices under the direction of the professional RN nurse
  • Observes patients' physical, mental, and emotional conditions
  • Documents observations in a timely and accurate manner
  • Reports any change in patient condition to the nurse or medical staff
