The Patient Care Technician (PCT) functions as part of a dialysis health care team, providing safe and effective dialysis therapy under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse and in accordance with organizational policies, procedures, training, and applicable regulations. The role includes setting up and operating hemodialysis machines, maintaining a safe and clean work environment, and supporting the organization’s Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI), and patient-satisfaction efforts. The PCT provides direct patient care throughout dialysis treatment, including assessing patients and vascular access, initiating and discontinuing prescribed treatments, monitoring patient response, documenting treatment information, collecting laboratory specimens, and reporting changes in condition to a registered nurse or supervisor. The role also supports patient education and self-care, and helps patients understand treatment options and transitions to home dialysis where applicable. As a preceptor, the PCT supports recruitment, orientation, training, and competency evaluation of clinical staff. The position collaborates with clinical managers, education coordinators, nurses, and interdisciplinary team members on staff development, quality standards, infection control, and facility training initiatives. Additional duties include maintaining treatment equipment and the facility environment, completing records, supporting infection-control audits, and coordinating care for newly admitted patients in the Transitional Care Unit. The work involves interaction with patients, facility staff, and physicians in a health care facility. Travel between assigned facilities and community locations is required; travel to regional, business unit, and corporate meetings may also be required. The role may involve exposure to infectious or contagious diseases and materials. Direct patient care regularly involves heavy lifting and moving patients and assisting with ambulation, frequent and prolonged standing, bending, and occasional pushing or pulling equipment. Employees may need to lift or lower solutions weighing up to 30 pounds frequently and up to 40 pounds occasionally, as high as five feet; assistance devices or coworkers are available for heavier items. Employees must take the Ishihara Color Blindness test as a condition of employment, though failing it does not preclude employment and reasonable accommodation may be considered.
