The Patient Care Technician (PCT) on the Medical/Oncology Unit at UPMC Northwest Hospital provides direct patient care, assisting with procedures and daily living activities. The role involves supporting physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies, and reporting patient status changes to the Registered Nurse (RN). PCTs perform core nursing assistant responsibilities, including vital signs, I&O, specimen collection, and Foley care, along with specific unit-identified tasks such as phlebotomy, EKG, simple dressing, Foley catheter removal, point of care testing, bladder scans, straight catheterization, or IV catheter removal. They are responsible for ensuring equipment functions properly, communicating effectively with other departments, and maintaining professional relationships. The PCT contributes to universal unit activities, responds to patient needs, and provides patient and family education under RN direction. They must adhere strictly to all policies, procedures, and safety standards, including standard precautions. The role also involves documenting in the medical record, performing clerical functions, and participating in unit projects and quality initiatives. Advanced skills may be required based on department needs, such as phlebotomy, peripheral IV removal, indwelling Foley catheter removal, basic arrhythmia interpretation, 12-lead EKG, and NG tube management.
