Patient Care Technician Surgical Intermediate Part Time Days
About The Position
The Patient Care Technician works in the Surgical Intermediate Care Unit (2A), a 26-bed unit serving adult patients with acute medical, surgical, and cardiac conditions, including patients requiring care after complex surgeries and patients needing medication drips unsuitable for a medical-surgical inpatient unit. The unit also accepts medical step-down and overflow patients. Under the supervision of a registered nurse, the technician performs basic patient care activities and supports unit workflow. The position is part time, on days from 6:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., with rotating weekends, for 24 hours per week (0.6 FTE).
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Current qualification as a Certified Nursing Assistant, Certified Medical Assistant, or Emergency Medical Technician, or be a nursing student who has completed one semester of clinical experience.
- American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS).
Responsibilities
- Perform basic nursing care activities delegated and supervised by an RN, including monitoring vital signs, measuring blood glucose, and recording intake and output.
- Assist patients with personal care and activities of daily living, including bathing, grooming, and eating.
- Report abnormal findings or changes in patients’ physical, mental, or emotional conditions to nursing staff.
- Help keep patient rooms clean and orderly.
- Demonstrate flexibility, organization, and multitasking, and function under stressful situations.
- Use critical-thinking skills to prioritize and complete unit work as the needs of the unit, patients, and staff change.
- Serve as a liaison between patient care units and other patient-related departments.
- Answer telephone, intercom, and call lights politely, use appropriate telephone etiquette, and communicate information to appropriate staff, family, or patients.
- Manage overall unit workflow with the charge RN and/or assistant manager as needed.
- Perform pre-census tasks and validate daily admission, discharge, and census lists as needed.
