About The Position

Geisinger is seeking a highly motivated Patient Care Technician for their Advanced Acute Care Medical Unit at Geisinger Medical Center. This role operates on a night shift schedule and offers a $1500 sign-on bonus for eligible candidates, a minimum hiring rate of $18.94 with potential for higher rates based on experience, and shift differentials for evenings, nights, and weekends. Additionally, Geisinger offers up to $40,000 in financial support for those aspiring to become nurses. The position is part of the new ACE (Achieving Collaborative Excellence) Nursing Model of Care, which empowers Patient Care Technicians to perform duties not requiring a nursing license, offering greater autonomy and opportunities for career advancement. The role involves direct patient care, including ADLs, vital signs collection, Point of Care testing, patient mobility, and equipment checks, all under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. Requirements

High School Diploma or Equivalent (GED)
Minimum of 1 year related work experience
Basic Life Support Certification within 6 months

Responsibilities

Facilitate ADLs: hygiene, toileting, mobility, meals
Collect vital signs & daily weights
Conduct Point of Care testing
Turn & reposition patients
Perform equipment checks & exchanges
Provide dressing care
Remove Foley Catheter and Peripheral IV
Perform nasogastric tube removal and nasal swabs
Check code carts and oxygen storage cabinets
Perform a wide variety of advanced patient care duties under the supervision of a Registered Nurse
Maintain the patient care and unit environment consistent with policies and procedures
Provide enhanced patient care under the direction of the licensed nurse, which may include advanced dressing care, suctioning, removal of Foley Catheter and peripheral IV
Perform venipunctures and skin punctures to obtain blood specimens
Perform daily, hands-on aspects of the storage, preparation and delivery of breast milk, infant and pediatric formulas
Document in the appropriate sections to create a complete and accurate medical record
Identify, observe, and document the physical needs of the patient
Report any changes in patient condition to licensed personnel in a timely manner
Obtain and maintain the integrity of specimens in accordance with policy and procedure
Provide for or assist patients with activities of daily living and fulfill designated and delegated responsibilities for ongoing continuum of care, including patient hygiene and changing linens
Provide one to one patient safety watch as assigned
Accurately process specimens and provide timely transport of the specimen to the laboratory
Perform point of care patient testing and point of care instrument maintenance and quality control
Assist in problem solving, trouble shooting and taking corrective measures in care and maintenance of equipment and supplies
Serve as a preceptor and mentor for new staff and students
Perform clerical duties for admissions, transfers, discharges, and deaths
Transcribe and process orders according to unit standard
Release and confirm ordered tests to appropriate departments
Coordinate transportation of patients to multiple tests
Participate in obtaining and communicating electronic information as pertinent to the nursing unit
Schedule tests, fax consults, etc.
Assist in ordering supplies (stationery items, floor stock, patient needs, individual nursing supplies)
Communicate with food services to ensure appropriate patient diets
Operate, problem solve, and take corrective measures for clerical equipment, including scheduling maintenance of computers, fax machines, phones, etc.
Assist with transporting non-controlled medications to and from Pharmacy and within the unit as needed
Assist with transporting blood products to and from Blood Bank as needed
Perform discharge follow up phone calls / coordinate virtual discharge appointment team
Support / Assist staff with 5 min Drills and/or Quality Rounds - participate in regulatory readiness as needed
