The Patient Care Technician (PCT) works as part of a dialysis healthcare team to provide safe and effective dialysis therapy under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse. The role includes setting up and operating hemodialysis machines, assisting with patient care and treatment monitoring, maintaining a safe and clean work environment, and complying with organizational policies, training, and applicable regulations. The PCT supports the Quality Enhancement Program (QEP) and continuous quality improvement activities, including efforts related to patient satisfaction and process improvement. The role provides direct patient care throughout dialysis treatments, including patient assessment, vascular access care, treatment setup and discontinuation, vital-sign and weight monitoring, documentation, specimen collection, and reporting changes in patient condition to a registered nurse or supervisor. The PCT also supports staff training, infection-control practices, recordkeeping, and transitional dialysis care for newly admitted patients, including education and coordination related to treatment and modality options. The work includes desk and computer tasks, interaction with patients and healthcare staff, and travel between assigned facilities and community locations. The healthcare-facility environment has controlled air temperature and moderate noise, with possible exposure to infectious or contagious materials. Direct care involves frequent, prolonged standing, bending, and regular heavy lifting or moving of patients, with assistance or material-handling devices available for heavier items. Employees must take an Ishihara color-blindness test; failing the test does not preclude employment, and reasonable accommodations may be considered.
