The Patient Care Technician (PCT) works as part of a dialysis health care team to provide safe and effective dialysis therapy under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse. The role includes setting up and operating hemodialysis machines, helping maintain a safe and clean work environment, and supporting the organization’s Quality Enhancement Program and continuous quality improvement activities. The PCT welcomes and monitors patients, assesses vascular access, performs cannulation, and carries out dialysis treatment procedures according to prescribed orders, facility policies, training, and applicable state law. Responsibilities include obtaining and documenting vital signs and weights, programming treatment parameters, monitoring patients and equipment, responding to unusual findings, collecting laboratory specimens, and completing treatment records. The position also supports staff training, infection-control practices, and the transitional care of newly admitted dialysis patients. In the Transitional Care Unit, the PCT helps coordinate patients’ first four weeks of dialysis, reinforces education, supports understanding of treatment and home-dialysis options, and assists with supplies and inventory. The work involves interaction with patients, facility staff, and physicians; travel between assigned facilities and community locations; exposure to infectious or contagious materials; and frequent standing, bending, lifting, and moving patients or equipment. A high school diploma or GED is required. Employees must meet applicable CMS-approved certification requirements within the required timeline, complete the organization’s dialysis training program, and obtain CPR certification for continued employment.
