Geisinger is piloting a new model of care on its Advanced Acute Care Units, the ACE Nursing Model of Care, which utilizes more Patient Care Technician staff to perform duties that do not require a nursing license. This model offers Patient Care Technicians increased opportunities for career advancement, autonomy, and greater involvement in patient care delivery. The role involves performing a wide variety of advanced patient care duties under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, maintaining the patient care and unit environment, and meeting the qualifications to provide care for patients in specific age ranges. Responsibilities include enhanced patient care, documentation, identifying and observing patient needs, reporting changes in patient condition, obtaining and maintaining specimen integrity, assisting patients with activities of daily living, performing one-to-one patient safety watches, processing and transporting specimens, performing point-of-care patient testing, assisting with equipment and supply maintenance, serving as a preceptor and mentor, performing clerical duties, transcribing and processing orders, coordinating patient transportation, communicating electronic information, ordering supplies, communicating with food services, operating and maintaining clerical equipment, and transporting non-controlled medications and blood products. The role also includes discharge follow-up calls and supporting quality rounds and regulatory readiness.
