About The Position

The University of Iowa Health Care is seeking Patient Care Technicians for the Surgical & Trauma Care Unit (3RC) within the Medical Surgical Services (MSS) Division. This is a 48-bed adult surgical unit focusing on the care of surgical and trauma patients. The unit staff is comprised of motivated individuals passionate about providing patient-centered care that addresses the physiological and psychological aspects of illness or injury. The team emphasizes teamwork, a healthy work environment, and providing resources for staff to excel and achieve career goals.

Requirements

• Ability to read, write and follow instructions.

• Successful candidates will be required to self-disclose any conviction history and will be subject to a criminal background check and credential/education verification.
• This position is not eligible for University sponsorship for employment authorization.

Responsibilities

• Independently obtain and record vital signs including temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure.
• Carry out medical asepsis when performing skills and tasks including phlebotomy, peripheral IV removal, Foley catheter removal, and care for patients who are medically isolated.
• Perform simple diagnostic and therapeutic procedures such as enemas, preoperative preparation of the skin, dressing changes, collecting specimens, and applying binders, braces, etc.
• Perform special duties as taught and directed by the nurse in charge, including phlebotomy, ECG lead/12 lead placement, and brace/pin site cares.
• Assist with patient admission, transfers, and discharges.
• Directly provide for patients' personal hygiene and comfort.
• Turn, position, and ambulate patients.
• Transport patients, equipment, specimens, and supplies.
• Feed patients, serve drinking water and nourishments, and record patients' intake.
• Assist patients with bedpans and urinals and record output.
• Participate in nursing care conferences; report pertinent patient information and incidents to the nurse in charge.
• Provide for patient comfort measures through social interactions.
• Share responsibility for preparation, proper use and care of equipment and supplies, and for neatness and cleanliness of the unit.
• May assemble and maintain equipment and supplies in preparation for various diagnostic or treatment procedures performed by physicians or nurses.
• Clean areas per designated guidelines and standards demonstrating proper use of approved disinfectants, cleaning products, and care of housekeeping equipment.
• Stock and supply patient rooms and nursing units.
