About The Position

The Patient Care Technician is a member of the patient care team who provides basic nursing care and clerical and technical clinical services supporting patients’ care, cleanliness, safety, and comfort. The role assists patients of all ages with activities of daily living, including bathing, meals, toileting, and ambulation; takes and documents vital signs; reports observations to licensed staff; and may provide one-on-one care for patients on suicide or safety precautions. Advanced tasks may be performed when the employee has the appropriate competencies. The position may support multiple nursing units or Carilion facilities and works in a fast-paced patient care environment. Required orientation classes are held during daytime hours, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., for the first two weeks and are mandatory.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent education.
AHA BLS-HCP certification required within six months of hire.
Effective interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills.
Successful completion of required orientation and position competency validation.
Ability to prioritize and manage time in a fast-paced environment.
Ability to demonstrate knowledge of lifespan growth and development and recognize, interpret, document, and report patient information in accordance with patients’ age-specific needs and departmental procedures.
Ability to attend mandatory daytime orientation classes, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., for the first two weeks.

Nice To Haves

Previous direct patient care experience preferred.
Certified Nursing Assistant certification preferred; required if working in a critical access facility.

Responsibilities

Provide basic nursing care and, when qualified, advanced technical skills according to established standards and departmental procedures.
Assist patients with activities of daily living and provide one-on-one observation when assigned, including for patients on suicide precautions or experiencing confusion.
Measure and document patient observations, such as blood pressure, oxygen levels, and temperature, and report relevant information to licensed staff.
Transport patients, supplies, specimens, and equipment within the facility.
Support admission, transfer, discharge, registration, and patient-flow processes, keeping the patient experience a priority.
Review medical records for outstanding orders and notify nurses about stat orders and medication changes.
Assist with unit scheduling, including covering lunch assignments; participate in unit huddles, interdepartmental rounds, shared governance, and organizational committees as applicable.
Welcome and assist patients and visitors, provide way-finding, answer and route telephone and patient-call-system requests, and take accurate messages.
Maintain unit supplies and equipment by ordering, stocking, organizing, cleaning, and coordinating timely repairs as needed.
Operate and maintain general office equipment and demonstrate competency with the electronic medical record; assist with chart audits.
Monitor waiting and break room cleanliness and participate in safety and environmental rounds.
Support regulatory compliance, unit quality surveillance, performance improvement, and service-line or departmental outcomes.
Perform competency-appropriate tasks that may include phlebotomy, nonsterile wound dressings, saline-lock replacement or removal, and colostomy bag changes.
Maintain patient, staff, and customer confidentiality and suggest cost-containment initiatives for the work unit.
