About The Position

UPMC Shadyside’s Medical Oncology Team is seeking a Nursing Student to join their team as a Patient Care Technician on the 6 Main Medical Oncology unit. This Magnet-designated teaching hospital is at the forefront of cancer research and education. The 6 Main unit specializes in a wide range of oncological diagnoses, primarily serving lymphoma patients and administering chemotherapy and biological treatments. As a Patient Care Technician, you will provide routine patient care and support department services under the direction of nurses and physicians. Duties include assisting with ADLs (bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, ambulating, turning and repositioning patients), taking vital signs, performing simple dressings, EKGs, bladder scans, and collecting specimens. Requirements

  • Successful completion of UPMC nursing assistant or EIC training program or Successful completion of UPMC patient care technician class.
  • Knowledge of body mechanics and transfer techniques.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 1 year of healthcare experience, OR completion of at least one clinical rotation as part of a nursing or PT/OT/PA program or related health care training, OR completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in a health sciences field.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire
  • Act 34

  • Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Distribute supplies and equipment.
  • Document in medical records and comply with safety policies.
